Four-Leaf Clover Jewellery: Meaning, Styles and How to Wear It in the UAE

The short answer. A four-leaf clover stands for luck, and in one well-known tradition each leaf has its own meaning: hope, faith, love and luck. Clover jewellery turns that into a simple, balanced shape that works on its own or layered, which makes it one of the easiest motifs to wear every day.

What does a clover necklace mean?

Most clover plants have three leaves. A four-leaf clover is a rare variation, and that rarity is where the link with luck comes from. The odds are often quoted as about 1 in 10,000, although a 2017 count of around 5.7 million clovers in six European countries found closer to 1 in 5,000 (summary and sources). Either way, finding one is unusual enough to feel like a sign.

In Christian tradition, the four leaves are said to stand for:

  • Hope
  • Faith
  • Love
  • Luck, the fourth leaf, which is the one that makes it rare

Today most people wear a clover simply because they like the shape, or as a small reminder of hope and good things to come. You don't need to believe in luck to enjoy the design.

Is the clover the same as the shamrock?

Not quite. A shamrock is a three-leaf clover and a well-known symbol of Ireland. The four-leaf clover is the rare version with an extra leaf, and that's the one connected with luck. Most clover jewellery uses four leaves, or a stylised four-petal shape.

What brand is the clover necklace?

No single brand owns it. The four-leaf clover is a folk motif, and jewellers at every price point use it, from high-jewellery houses to everyday brands. Ours come in three looks, all in 18k gold plating, applied by PVD, on 316L stainless steel:

  • Nafla: an open clover outlined in zircon, as a pendant, studs and a bracelet.
  • Opalia: an opal clover ringed with zircon, as a pendant and studs.
  • Noore: a bracelet of five clovers, each a black stone in a gold-plated bezel ringed with zircon.

How to wear clover jewellery

On its own

A single clover pendant sits best just below the collarbone. It works with an open neckline, a crew neck or over a fine knit. If it's your first clover piece, start here.

Layered

Pair a clover pendant with a plain chain or a tennis necklace about 5 cm shorter or longer, so the two don't tangle. Our clover pendants are 40 cm with a 5 cm extender, and so are the Ikhlas and Malakiyah tennis necklaces, so wear one at 40 cm and the other at 45 cm. A clover and a tennis necklace work well together: one gives you a shape, the other a line of sparkle. Browse the tennis jewellery collection.

On the wrist

Clover bracelets look good next to a watch. Wear the watch on the wrist bone and the bracelet just above it so they don't knock. Noore's black stones give it enough presence to wear on its own. For more ideas, see how to stack bracelets.

As a set

A pendant with matching studs is a classic combination, but you don't need the whole set at once. Two clover pieces plus something plain usually looks more considered than a full matching set. Nafla comes as a pendant, studs and a bracelet, and Opalia as a pendant and studs.

With an abaya

A clover pendant at the full 45 cm sits well over a dark abaya, and a clover bracelet shows at the cuff.

Clover jewellery in the UAE heat

In the UAE, sweat, sunscreen and pool water are the things to think about. All our clover pieces, opal included, are waterproof for hand-washing and wudu, rain, the shower and the gym. After a long swim in the pool or the sea, rinse them in fresh water and dry them. Put them on after perfume and sunscreen, and store each piece on its own in a pouch so the pieces don't scratch one another. Our waterproof jewellery guide explains why the base metal matters most here.
