What Does Gold Plated Mean? Gold Plated Jewellery, Explained

Gold plated means a thin layer of real gold has been bonded to the surface of a different, cheaper metal. The piece isn't gold all the way through: underneath is stainless steel, brass, copper or silver. The karat on the label (for example "18k gold plated") describes only that surface layer. How long the colour lasts depends on the metal underneath, how the gold was applied, and how you wear it, not on the karat.
Spelling doesn't change the meaning: gold plated, gold-plated, gold plated jewelry and gold plated jewellery all describe the same thing.
Gold plated meaning, in more detail
A plated piece is a base-metal piece with a gold skin. The gold is applied in one of two ways:
- Electroplating: gold is deposited from a chemical bath using an electric current.
- PVD (physical vapour deposition): the coating is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and condenses onto the surface.
The most widely referenced industry standard is the US Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23). It says a piece can be called "gold plated" when every significant surface carries gold alloy of "reasonable durability", and the karat has to be stated next to the words. For electroplate, the FTC's example of an acceptable marking is at least 10k gold, with a minimum thickness equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold. That is a very thin layer, which is why two pieces with the same label can look completely different after six months.
Gold plated, gold filled, vermeil, gold tone and solid gold: what each term means
These terms aren't synonyms. The first five rows follow the FTC Jewelry Guides; the last two are marketing words with no standard behind them.
| Term | What it means | Real standard? |
|---|---|---|
| Gold plated / gold electroplate | 10k gold or finer on any base metal, of "reasonable durability". The FTC's electroplate example is a minimum of 0.175 microns | Yes (FTC) |
| Heavy gold electroplate | The same, with a minimum of 2.5 microns | Yes (FTC) |
| Gold vermeil | A sterling silver base only, with at least 10k gold and a minimum of 2.5 microns | Yes (FTC) |
| Gold filled | Gold bonded mechanically (heat and pressure), at least 1/20th of the metal's weight | Yes (FTC) |
| Rolled gold plate / gold overlay | The same mechanical process, at least 1/40th of the metal's weight | Yes (FTC) |
| Solid gold | Gold alloy all the way through, at a stated karat. Hollow pieces must not be called "solid" | Partly |
| Gold dipped | No definition. Usually means plated, often thinly | No |
| Gold tone | A colour. There may be no gold in the item at all | No |
A simple test that needs no regulation: a plated piece whose listing never says it is plated is a warning sign. Brands that are confident in what they sell say what it is. More checks like this are in how to spot quality jewellery online.
Choosing between PVD plating, ordinary plating and vermeil for everyday wear is a separate question, answered in PVD gold vs gold plating vs vermeil. This page only defines the terms.
What "18k gold plated" and "18ct gold plated" mean
The karat on a plated piece describes the purity of the gold in the coating only. "18k gold plated" means the coating is 18-karat gold (75% gold by weight), on a base metal that isn't gold at all. "18ct" is the British spelling of the same thing.
This is the most common misunderstanding in the category:
- On a solid piece, "18k" describes the whole object and says something about its value.
- On a plated piece, the same characters describe a finish. A 24k plated bracelet and an 18k plated bracelet differ in the colour and softness of the coating, not in what you own.
- Karat also says nothing about durability. Higher-karat gold is softer, so it wears through faster. Thickness and the base metal decide how long a finish lasts.

How gold plating is applied
There are two common methods:
- Electroplating is a wet process: the piece hangs in a solution of gold ions and an electric current pulls the gold onto the surface. It is cheap and fast, and most "gold" fashion jewellery is made this way.
- PVD happens in a vacuum chamber. The industry uses it where it wants a harder, more scratch-resistant finish, which is why it is standard on watch cases and increasingly common on steel jewellery.
One honest qualification: PVD is a process, not a thickness. It tells you how the gold got there, not how much is there. "PVD" on a product page is a good sign, not a guarantee.
Our pieces have 18k gold plating, applied by PVD, on 316L stainless steel.
How long does gold plating last? Three things decide it
-
The base metal. This matters more than anything else, and brands say least about it.
- Brass and copper form dark oxides, and sterling silver contains copper too. Stainless steel doesn't.
- Gold layers are porous, so moisture can reach a reactive base metal through a thin coat. Thin gold over brass isn't a neutral choice.
- The steel grade matters as well: 316L contains molybdenum, which resists pitting from chlorides (salt).
- How the coating was applied. Two pieces sold under the same two words can be made very differently, which is why the method is worth asking about and why we state ours.
-
How you wear it, which in the UAE means chlorides.
- Sweat, sea air and pool water all contain salts.
- Summers above 40°C with coastal humidity mean skin is damp for more of the year than in most markets.
- Perfume, sunscreen and hand sanitiser are on the same list.
Thin electroplate on brass can fade within weeks. A well-made PVD finish on 316L steel is built for daily wear. Our 12-month warranty covers faults that show up in normal wear: tarnishing or discolouration, plating that lifts or flakes, a clasp or setting that fails, or a stone that comes loose. It doesn't cover damage, perfume or lotion, or plating that thins at friction points over time: the full exclusions are on our brand facts page. Is gold plated jewellery worth anything?
As metal, no. A plated piece has effectively no resale or scrap value at any thickness. The gold on it is a fraction of a gram and costs more to recover than it is worth, and the steel, brass or copper underneath has no meaningful scrap value either. We'd rather you heard that from us than at a gold buyer's counter.
So don't buy plated jewellery to store value. If that's what you want, buy 21k or 22k gold by weight at the day's published rate (see where to buy gold jewellery in Dubai).
What plated jewellery does offer is cost per wear. An AED 129 bracelet worn twice a week for two years is 208 wears, or AED 0.62 a wear. The full numbers, including where solid gold comes out ahead over ten years, are in is gold-plated jewellery worth it?.
Caring for gold plated jewellery
- Put jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray have dried.
- Our pieces are waterproof: hand-washing, rain, the shower and the gym don't need them taken off. Rinse in fresh water after a long swim in the pool or the sea.
- Wipe with a soft cloth. Never use abrasive polish on a plated piece.
- Store pieces dry and apart so they don't scratch each other.

Two questions to ask before you buy plated
- What is the base metal? Not "gold plated", but what is underneath.
- Does the warranty cover the finish, or only manufacturing faults?
If a brand won't answer either, that's your answer. Avoid vague wording like "gold tone" when you're paying for gold plating.

Frequently asked questions
What is gold plated jewellery?
Jewellery made from a base metal (stainless steel, brass, copper or silver) with a thin layer of real gold bonded to the outside. The gold is a surface finish, not part of the structure. How it performs depends on the metal underneath and on how substantial the coating is.
Is 18k gold plated real gold?
The coating is real 18-karat gold, but the piece isn't a gold piece. Both are true at once, and the confusion sits in the gap between them: the real gold present is a coating that weighs a fraction of a gram.
What is a gold plated ring?
A ring made of another metal with a gold coating on its surface. Rings are the hardest test of any plating: keys, bags and hand-washing mean constant friction, and thin plating wears through on the underside of the band first. The base metal and the process matter far more than the karat number.
What does gold dipped mean?
"Gold dipped" is a marketing phrase with no standard definition. It usually means plated, often thinly. Treat it as an unspecified coating and ask for the base metal.
What does gold tone mean?
"Gold tone" describes a colour, not a material. Gold-tone hardware on a bag or watch looks gold, but there may be no gold on it at all, so it can't be compared with "gold plated".
Does gold plated jewellery tarnish?
The gold itself doesn't tarnish. A thin, porous layer lets the base metal underneath react and show through, or wears away at friction points. On brass or copper that happens quickly in humid, salty air. On 316L stainless steel it is far slower.
Will gold plated jewellery turn my skin green?
Not when the base is stainless steel. The green mark comes from copper or brass reacting with sweat. Our pieces use 316L, the grade specified for surgical and marine use.
What does gold patra jewellery mean?
We couldn't find a published industry definition of "patra", and we won't invent one. In South Asian retail it describes gold sheet or foil work over a base. Ask for the base metal and the karat of the gold before assuming it means more than plated.
